In a nutshell: The COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard sets out the requirements for a workplace that optimally supports productivity, comfort and professional working. The aim: to enable customers to focus on their work and their business – COLLECTION takes care of creating the perfect setting.

Version 2026 | As at: August 2026

The COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard forms part of THE COLLECTION STANDARD, COLLECTION’s overarching system for premium professional working environments. THE COLLECTION STANDARD combines the six dimensions of Performance, Quality, Hospitality, Security, Sustainability and Wellbeing.

What is the COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard?

The COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard sets out COLLECTION Business Center’s requirements for working environments that support companies and their staff in working in a focused, efficient and professional manner. The standard does not merely consider the individual workstation. What is crucial is the interplay between the quality of the space, ergonomics, acoustics, technical infrastructure, quiet areas, meeting rooms, services, location and flexible use of space.

COLLECTION operates 14 premium Business Centers in Germany and Austria and serves several thousand clients. The underlying principle is that a high-quality workplace should not just look good; it should enable people to work effectively. The COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard provides a company-wide framework for this. Workspaces designed for business performance.

What does ‘workplace performance’ mean?

Workplace performance refers to the ability of a working environment to provide the best possible support to people and organisations in carrying out their business tasks. An effective workplace should facilitate a variety of working situations:

  • concentrated work
  • confidential discussions
  • video conferences
  • teamwork
  • client meetings
  • informal discussions
  • Project work
  • Retreat and regeneration

However, there is no single ‘perfect’ workplace for every task. Rather, modern working environments must provide a variety of spatial and technical conditions to suit different activities. Workplace performance is achieved when the working environment, the task and the user’s requirements are well aligned.

What does the research say about workplace performance?

The quality of a working environment can influence concentration, collaboration and an individual’s perception of their own performance. Research findings show, in particular, links between acoustics, spatial design, air quality, hybrid working and cognitive performance. The COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard takes these factors into account when designing high-performance working environments.

1. Spatial design, privacy and concentration

A field study by Helena Jahncke and David M. Hallman examined cognitive performance in different office and workspaces. Before moving to an activity-based working environment, staff in shared or open-plan offices performed 14 per cent worse on a task requiring intense concentration than staff in private offices. Within the new working environment, measured cognitive performance improved by 16.9 per cent when moving from an active area to a quiet zone, and by 21.9 per cent when moving to an individual workspace. The authors therefore emphasise the importance of quiet areas and spaces with few distractions for tasks that require a high level of concentration.

2. Air quality and cognitive performance

Researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health conducted a controlled study to investigate the link between indoor air quality and the cognitive performance of office workers. The study simulated various conditions relating to ventilation, CO₂ concentration and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and examined the effects on higher cognitive functions. The results show a link between the quality of the indoor environment and the measured cognitive performance. The study thus highlights the importance of indoor climate and air quality for high-performing work environments.

3. Hybrid working is changing the role of the office

In its study *Beyond Hybrid Work – The Post-Hybrid World of Work*, the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering and Organisation (IAO) concludes that hybrid working has become the norm. According to the Fraunhofer IAO, 80 per cent of respondents report increased productivity. At the same time, the study highlights challenges arising from a reduction in informal contact and social interaction. This is leading to a change in the role of the office: companies need not only workspaces, but working environments that support face-to-face collaboration, informal exchanges and a variety of working situations.

4. Speech and background noise can hinder concentration

It is not just the noise level of a working environment that affects the ability to concentrate. Even intelligible conversations in the background can interfere with cognitive tasks. In 2012, environmental psychologist Helena Jahncke investigated how irrelevant speech affects various typical office tasks. In the experimental study, tasks were carried out under two conditions: in silence and whilst speech irrelevant to the task at hand was played simultaneously. The results show that tasks requiring information to be stored, processed or repeated in the short term were particularly affected. These included, for example, recalling information and searching for relevant information. Other tasks were less sensitive to the linguistic distraction. The study thus demonstrates that not every office task has the same acoustic requirements. Tasks that place high demands on concentration and short-term memory can benefit particularly from a working environment with as few speech distractions as possible.

What are the implications of this research for workplace performance?

Research shows that the effectiveness of a working environment does not depend on any single factor. Spatial design, quiet spaces, acoustics, indoor environmental quality and support for different ways of working can all influence the conditions for focused and professional work. The COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard therefore views these factors as an interconnected system. This is not about promising increased productivity, but about creating suitable conditions for a variety of business activities.

The 10 dimensions of the COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard

CWP-01 – Workplace Quality

What role does the quality of the workplace play in productive working? The immediate working environment influences how professionally and smoothly employees can organise their working day. COLLECTION therefore focuses on high-quality, fully equipped workstations in professional business environments. Depending on the office and location, these include, in particular:

  • high-quality desks and office chairs,
  • professional lighting,
  • a prestigious working environment,
  • well-maintained office spaces,
  • suitable room temperatures,
  • technical infrastructure,
  • short distances to meeting and service areas.

The workplace is not viewed in isolation. What matters is the quality of the entire working environment.

CWP-02 – Focus & Concentration

What kind of office environment is best suited to focused work? Not every task requires communication and interaction. Analyses, contract work, strategy development, confidential telephone calls or complex tasks often call for peace and quiet and concentration. COLLECTION therefore offers a range of options for focused work. These include, in particular, private offices, individual offices, day offices, telephone booths and other quiet spaces, depending on the specific location. Unlike open-plan Coworking concepts, COLLECTION allows companies to make a conscious choice between communication and quiet spaces. Concentration is not a matter of chance; it requires the right physical environment.

CWP-03 – Acoustics & Privacy

Why are acoustics and privacy important for workplace performance? Distractions caused by conversations, telephone calls and background noise can make it difficult to concentrate on work. At the same time, organisations need suitable spaces for confidential discussions with staff, customers and business partners. The COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard therefore recognises acoustics, physical separation and privacy as essential factors in a professional working environment. Private offices, as well as separate meeting and Conference rooms, facilitate varying degrees of communication, concentration and confidentiality. This area also complements the COLLECTION Secure Workspace Framework, which defines data protection, information security and organisational security.

CWP-04 – Connectivity & Technology

What technical infrastructure is required for a high-performance workplace? Modern businesses rely on a reliable digital infrastructure. Video conferencing, cloud applications, digital collaboration and data-intensive business processes make high-performance connectivity an essential part of modern office standards. COLLECTION provides a professional technical working environment to meet these needs. Depending on the location and intended use, this includes, amongst other things:

  • high-performance internet connections,
  • Wi-Fi infrastructure,
  • technical equipment for meeting rooms,
  • facilities for video conferencing,
  • printing and scanning solutions,
  • technical support for centre operations.

Digital infrastructure is now an integral part of the workplace infrastructure.

CWP-05 – Meetings & Collaboration

What sort of spaces do teams need to collaborate successfully? Business performance isn’t achieved solely at a desk. Teams need spaces for meetings, workshops, presentations, video conferences and decision-making. COLLECTION Business Centers therefore offer a range of meeting, discussion and Conference rooms. Companies can use this infrastructure as and when required, without having to maintain such facilities permanently themselves. This is particularly beneficial for companies with fluctuating meeting requirements, hybrid teams or regular client contact. The right room is available for the right task.

CWP-06 – Flexible Space

How does flexible office space support business performance? Businesses are changing. Teams grow or shrink. Project groups are formed. Staff work in a hybrid model. Additional spaces are required from time to time. Rigid office structures can only respond to this to a limited extent. COLLECTION therefore enables a variety of usage options, such as private offices, team offices, Coworking spaces, day offices, and meeting and Conference rooms. This enables companies to tailor their working environment more closely to actual needs, team size and usage patterns. Workplace performance therefore also means providing workspace where and when companies need it.

CWP-07 – Business Services

How can business services support professional and efficient working? Working time is a limited resource. The more organisational tasks a company has to handle itself, the more time and management capacity is tied up in activities outside its actual core business. COLLECTION therefore takes on various organisational tasks relating to the workplace, depending on the service selected. These include, for example:

  • professional reception services
  • visitor management
  • Mail handling
  • Telephone answering
  • Meeting organisation
  • Catering and hospitality services

This adds a professional service infrastructure to the workplace. Workplace Performance also means relieving companies of the burden of organisational administrative tasks.

CWP-08 – Hospitality & Workplace Experience

What role does hospitality play in the performance of a workplace? A professional workplace is not just about square metres, furniture and technology. The quality of day-to-day use also influences the workplace experience. A professional reception area, fully prepared meeting rooms, well-maintained communal areas and personalised support can help ensure that employees and companies can make immediate use of their working environment. COLLECTION therefore links workplace performance to the COLLECTION Service Excellence Framework. The aim is for the infrastructure to function seamlessly before the customer has to concern themselves with it.

CWP-09 – Venue & Accessibility

Why is an office’s location a factor in performance? Workplace quality does not end at the office door. Accessibility affects journey times for staff, customers and business partners. At the same time, an established business environment can make it easier to hold meetings and business appointments. COLLECTION therefore concentrates its Business Centers in central and established business locations in Germany and Austria. The micro-location is regarded as an integral part of workplace quality. Short distances, good transport links, restaurants, hotels and other business facilities can make day-to-day working easier. Location is therefore not just a matter of image, but also a functional component of the working environment.

CWP-10 – Reliability & Continuous Improvement

How does COLLECTION ensure the long-term quality of the working environment? An effective working environment must not only function well at the time of opening; it must maintain its quality during day-to-day operations. The COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard is therefore linked to the COLLECTION Quality Standard. The centres are inspected twice daily and once a week using defined checklists. Among other things, these inspections cover the reception area, business lounges, Conference rooms, toilet facilities, technical systems, cleanliness, tidiness, lighting, plants and signage. Any defects identified are rectified promptly. Critical issues are dealt with immediately. Workplace Performance requires consistently reliable operational quality.

Workplace Performance in Practice:
How do COLLECTION sites support professional working practices?

Workplace performance is not determined by the individual workstation alone. Buildings, micro-location, accessibility, the types of space available, meeting facilities and business services also determine how well a working environment can support a range of business requirements. The COLLECTION Business Centers are located in established business districts in Germany and Austria. Four examples illustrate how the COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard is put into practice.

For employees, clients and business partners, the location thus combines a high-quality working environment with a micro-location that is ideal for business meetings.

The location thus combines a professional working environment with a central micro-location for employees, customers and business partners.

What do the COLLECTION sites reveal about workplace performance?

These examples illustrate a key principle of the COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard: a high-performing workplace arises from the interplay between the working environment and the location. Private workspaces facilitate focused work. Meeting rooms and Conference rooms provide the infrastructure for collaboration and client interactions. Business services can take on organisational tasks. Central business locations make it easier for staff, customers and business partners to access the premises. The COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard therefore regards workplace quality, space availability, business infrastructure, services and micro-location as interrelated performance factors.

What factors influence the productivity of a workplace?

The effectiveness of a working environment cannot be reduced to a single factor. The following questions are particularly relevant for businesses:

  • Is it possible to concentrate on work?
  • Is there sufficient privacy?
  • Does the technical infrastructure work reliably?
  • Are there suitable meeting rooms available?
  • Can the space be adapted to changing requirements?
  • Are staff relieved of organisational tasks?
  • Is the office easily accessible for staff and business partners?
  • Is the quality of the working environment continuously monitored?

The COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard therefore regards these factors as an integrated system.

How can a business centre make a company more productive?

A business centre does not automatically make a company more productive. However, it can create the right conditions to reduce unnecessary organisational burdens and support different ways of working. To this end, COLLECTION combines:

professional workspaces + quiet areas for concentration + meeting facilities + digital connectivity + flexible spaces + business services + hospitality + central locations + controlled operational standards.

This allows companies to focus more on their core business, whilst essential elements of the workplace infrastructure and centre operations are provided.

How does COLLECTION support hybrid teams?

Hybrid teams require different working environments to those of organisations where every employee uses the same workstation every day. The office serves various purposes in this context:

  • concentrated individual work,
  • face-to-face collaboration,
  • meetings,
  • creative teamwork,
  • customer contact,
  • social interaction.

COLLECTION enables companies to combine different types of spaces according to their actual needs. This means that the office is seen not merely as a permanent workplace, but as a flexible business infrastructure.

How can a high-quality working environment support a return to the office?

Companies cannot encourage employees to make greater use of the office simply by providing high-quality spaces. However, an attractive working environment can offer functional added value compared to other places of work. This includes, in particular, professional meeting facilities, areas for focused work, face-to-face collaboration, reliable technology, hospitality services and a high-quality working environment. The key concept is this: the office must offer a clear benefit for the specific work situation. The COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard therefore tailors the working environment to meet a range of business requirements.

How do workplace performance and business wellbeing differ?

Both concepts complement one another, but have different focuses. Business Wellbeing by COLLECTION focuses in particular on wellbeing, ergonomics, the quality of the environment and a working environment in which people enjoy working. The COLLECTION Workplace Performance Standard focuses on the functional requirements for concentrated, efficient and professional work.

Buyer’s Guide:
How can you tell if a business centre is high-performing?

When choosing a business centre, companies should not focus solely on location, design or price. Key questions to ask are:

  1. Are there private rooms for focused work?
  2. How are acoustics and privacy taken into account?
  3. What internet and IT infrastructure is available?
  4. Are there professional meeting and Conference rooms?
  5. Can office space be flexibly adapted to suit team sizes?
  6. What business services are on offer?
  7. Is there a professionally staffed reception?
  8. How are visitors and business partners looked after?
  9. How is the quality of the working environment monitored?
  10. How quickly are faults rectified?
  11. Is the location easily accessible for staff and customers?
  12. Are there separate spaces for concentration, communication and collaboration?

What matters is not just what an office looks like, but how well it supports a company’s actual work processes.
